American Muscle Car Hemi Engine Restoration & Repair /

History of the HEMI Engine in 1950-1970s American Muscle Cars

Chrysler's Infamous Hemi V8 engine started production in 1951. We will refer to this engine as type 1. DeSoto and Dodge soon followed with their versions referred to as type 2 and 3 respectively. Type 1, 2,and 3 all have different displacements, as well as low and raised block configurations. In 1964, Dodge reintroduced a new style of Hemi that we will refer to as type 4. Nothing is interchangeable from earlier type (1, 2 and 3) Hemi engines with the new type 4, but they are related.

In 1951, Chrysler introduced their new line of V8 motors, popularly known as the "HEMI", because the combustion chamber was fully machined into the shape of a 1/2 dome or hemi-sphere; This was the first use of the HEMI Engine in an American passenger car engine. The intake and exhaust valves were located on opposite sides of the combustion chamber at 90 degrees to the cylinder bore axis, so separate individual rocker shaft assemblies (two on each head) were necessary to operate and control all sixteen Intake and Exhaust valves. It also centralized the spark plug location, making the flame travel shorter. This design gave the Hemi, terrific breathing capability. It also gave the combustion chamber, greater thermal efficiency. These engines run cooler because of having a greater surface for heat transfer along with large cooling passages. This design also allowed higher compression ratios, due to its larger volume. Hemi's have two rocker shafts per head and complicated valve train. This process proved to be extremely costly and would eventually exceed production costs. Phasing out the Hemi head in lieu of a much cheaper, Wedge head design was inevitable.  Modern HEMI engine are often of a different type and share the HEMI name for branding purposes.

The HEMI engine was popular in production cars during the 50's and early 70's in cars and also in racing as one of the fastest engines on the market. Manufacturers such as Chrysler (FirePower Engine), DeSoto (FireDome Engine), Dodge (Red Ram Engine), and Plymouth were in aggressive competition during what is often called the "Horsepower Wars". The Chryster 426 HEMI Engine was so fast in 1964 that in 1965 it was banned from NASCAR races. HEMI Engines have a hemispherical combustion chamber that was great for efficient airflow and torque. The name HEMI has become synonymous with BIG and POWERFUL and these types of engines helped to shape the state of the art in racing and street cars during their time on the market.
